Caminito del Rey

A planned outdoor excursion along the gorge walkway; check official access requirements before committing.

A sense of place

This is a planned gorge walk, not a casual roadside stop. Walkways and the surrounding approach paths make the landscape the main attraction.

History and culture

The walkway began as infrastructure for hydroelectric operations, built in the early twentieth century to connect working sites and support maintenance. Its royal name is associated with Alfonso XIII’s visit in 1921. After deterioration and closure, a restored route reopened in 2015. Knowing that industrial origin changes the walk: the engineering, railway and water-management landscape are as important to its story as the dramatic rock walls.

What to see

Book through the official operator, then read your ticket’s exact meeting point. The route is linear from the northern access towards El Chorro; plan the return connection before setting out. The Gaitanes gorge is the central spectacle, with the suspended walkways bringing the scale of the Guadalhorce landscape close. Approach paths and the exit towards El Chorro are part of the visit, not an inconvenience to ignore when estimating effort. Observe the contrast between river, rock faces and railway engineering, and follow staff instructions when stopping to look. This is an experience to walk attentively, not a race between photo points.

With children

Check current age and access rules before booking for children. Heights, steps and narrow walkways make this unsuitable as an ordinary buggy outing; consider everyone’s comfort carefully.

A suggested day

Suggested plan: reserved arrival and approach time → booked walk → pre-planned return connection → meal afterwards. Do not schedule a tight onward appointment.

Good to know

Recheck operator notices on the day: weather can affect access. Follow official equipment, footwear, identification and arrival instructions rather than a third-party summary.
